MeWeFree | Exclusive Clutter Magazine x Ron English Big Poppa "Classic Colorway" Figure Dropping This Friday
OK, so I decided to start an official blog titled CISED, an acronym for Celebrating Ill Shit Every Day.” I spent some time in the DMV while in college and “cise” was DC slang for hooking someone up with something (right?). It’ll just be the stuff I come across that moved me and there’s a lot that moves me. I don’t know what the regularity of posts will be, but I’m gonna try to produce daily content.
For a while now, I have been utterly obsessed with art toys (also known as designer toys). If you aren’t familiar, designer toys are rare figurines made out of vinyl or resin most of the time. The designs are usually very throwed, but most of it is just amazing to me. One that definitely caught my eye and is coming up for release is a collaboration between Clutter Magazine, online toy dealer I Am Retro and world-renowned pop-surrealist and street artist, Ron English. It’s titled Big Poppa “Classic Colorway” and I wish I could grab it for my fledgling collection. It’s a 6” tall vinyl figure resembling the late Notorious BIG rocking one of his standard, colorful Coogi-like along with removable Versace-esque shades, crown and chain. The chain is a little corny because it’s just a dollar symbol. It would’ve been cool if they mimicked the Jesus piece Biggie helped popularize, but I digress.
This is just the latest release of English’s Big Poppa figure. Dating back to what seems to be at least October 2019, Clutter and English have been dropping different colors of the Biggie figure. The line got on my radar when I saw the “Gimme The Loot” colorway a few months ago that was selling for $150. On that one, Biggie is jade-colored with a $100 bill printed across his torso. I wanted that one, but like with most of the Big Poppa figures, all 100 copies of it sold out quickly at a price of $150 a piece (now priced at $300 on eBay). It is unclear whether Ms. Voletta Wallace (Biggie’s mom) gave her blessing on the project.
The Big Poppa “Classic Colorway” is only limited to 75 copies and should also be expected to sell out quickly. In addition to the vinyl release, there will also be 12 Swavorski crystal-studded versions. Both will be available exclusively this Friday (February 28, 2020) at a pop-up event at 89 Crosby St in Soho, NYC. According to Clutter’s website, the Big Poppa “Classic Colorway” will cost $200 a pop. At the drop, there will also be free collectible cans from Kings County Brewers Collective (KCBC) available.
