SFS Muhammad Ali Sofubi Figure x Medicom

SFS Muhammad Ali Sofubi Figure x Medicom

If you’ve been following the blog, you have seen that I’ve been covering mostly designer toys that have dropped or will be dropping. The two first interviews I’ve done have been with Black toy designers Johnny Draco and Brovinci. I was thinking about it and decided that I’d use the CISED blog to delve deeper into Blackness on the designer toy front. Naturally, as a Black man who is into designer toys, I always keep an eye peeled for toys and/or artists who encompass my culture. There doesn’t seem to be a whole lot of Black representation on the designer toy market, but I’m gonna try my best to bring y’all everything that I find.

That being said, I came across a toy that really caught my attention because it involves one of my personal heroes. That hero would be none other than Muhammad Ali. No one asked, but Ali is instrumental in the name “MeWeFree.” In the classic doc, When We Were Kings, about Ali vs. Foreman in “The Rumble In The Jungle,” it was revealed that Ali spat the shortest poem in the history of the English language while addressing college students. The poem was simply “Me. We.” Hearing that back in the day had a profound effect on me and my outlook. He pretty much abbreviated the African proverb “I Am We.” It’s hard to explain, but “Me We” is how I try to live my life. But I digress.

Toy company Medicom has released a new Sofubi (Japanese for “soft vinyl) Muhammad Ali figure. It is Medicom’s 32nd release in its “Fighting Series. A quick Google search revealed that most of the pieces from the Fighting Series are professional wrestlers, many from the WWE. It appears that “The Greatest” is the first boxer to be featured. Standing at ten inches tall, the figure is a shirtless Ali in his signature black-trimmed white trunks with white shoes and red gloves. His expression tells everyone who sees that he’s fully prepared to handcuff lightning and throw thunder in jail.

I would grab one to add to my fledgling toy collection, but at $130 a pop, it’s a tad out of my broke hypebeast price range. If you are interested in copping the SFS Muhammad Ali Sofubi Figure, visit Toy Tokyo.

As stated before, I’m gonna try to bring more Black toys to the fore. Stay tuned.
